Textile Certifications Decoded โ What They Test and Why They Matter
You've seen the logos on packaging: OEKO-TEX, GOTS, Fair Trade. But what do these certifications actually test for? As a certified textile manufacturer, we hold these standards every day in our Bahrain factory. Here's a straightforward guide to what each one means for you and your family.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 โ Safety for Your Skin
What it is: The world's most widely recognised textile safety certification. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests finished textile products for harmful substances โ over 100 test parameters including formaldehyde, heavy metals, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, and phthalates.
What it tests: Every component of the finished product is tested, including fabric, threads, buttons, zippers, and any coatings or prints. Products are categorised by skin contact level:
- Class I: Baby products (most stringent โ textiles for children up to 3 years)
- Class II: Products with direct skin contact (sheets, underwear, towels)
- Class III: Products without direct skin contact (curtains, tablecloths)
- Class IV: Furnishing materials (upholstery, mattress covers)
Why it matters: Bed sheets are in direct contact with your skin for 6-9 hours every night. OEKO-TEX ensures the fabric touching your body is free from substances that could irritate skin, trigger allergies, or pose health risks. This is especially important for children's bedding and anyone with sensitive skin.
How to verify: Every OEKO-TEX certificate has a unique label number that can be verified at oeko-tex.com/en/label-check.
GOTS โ Global Organic Textile Standard
What it is: The leading standard for organic textiles, covering the entire supply chain from harvesting raw materials through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing to labelling.
What it requires:
- Minimum 70% certified organic natural fibres ("made with organic") or 95% ("organic" label)
- All chemical inputs (dyes, auxiliaries) must meet strict environmental and toxicity criteria
- Wastewater treatment is mandatory at all processing stages
- Social criteria based on ILO conventions (no child labour, fair wages, safe conditions)
- Annual on-site inspections by independent certifiers
Why it matters: GOTS goes beyond product safety โ it certifies the entire production process is environmentally responsible. If sustainability matters to you, GOTS is the gold standard. The fibres are organic, the dyes are non-toxic, the water is treated, and the workers are treated fairly.
Fair Trade Certified
What it is: Fair Trade certification ensures that workers throughout the supply chain receive fair wages, work in safe conditions, and that communities benefit from the trade.
What it covers:
- Minimum prices that cover the cost of sustainable production
- Fair Trade Premium โ additional funds for community development (schools, healthcare, infrastructure)
- Safe working conditions and no forced or child labour
- Environmental protection requirements
Why it matters: Fair Trade addresses the human side of textile production. When you buy Fair Trade certified products, you're supporting living wages and community development in producing regions. The cotton farming communities that grow the raw material for our sheets benefit directly.
SILVERbac โ Antimicrobial Protection
What it is: SILVERbac is an antimicrobial textile treatment that uses silver ion technology to inhibit the growth of bacteria, mould, and mildew on fabric surfaces.
How it works: Silver ions are bonded to the fabric fibres during manufacturing. These ions disrupt the metabolism of bacteria and other microbes on contact, preventing them from reproducing.
Why it matters for the Gulf: In Bahrain's high-humidity environment, textiles are more susceptible to bacterial growth and musty odours. SILVERbac treatment keeps sheets and towels fresher between washes โ particularly valuable when humidity regularly exceeds 80%. The treatment lasts through the life of the product and does not wash out.
Safety: SILVERbac treatments used in bedding are EPA-registered and OEKO-TEX approved, meaning they've been tested and deemed safe for prolonged skin contact.
Other Certifications You May See
- Better Cotton Initiative (BCI): Promotes better environmental and social practices in cotton farming. Less rigorous than GOTS but covers a much larger percentage of global cotton production.
- STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX (STeP): Certifies sustainable manufacturing facilities (beyond just product testing).
- Supima: Not a safety certification โ it's a trademark verifying the cotton is American-grown Pima (extra-long staple).
- Egyptian Cotton Association: Verifies authenticity of Egyptian cotton origin โ important because "Egyptian cotton" is widely counterfeited.
