How to Care for Your Premium Sheets and Towels

Care Instructions from the People Who Made Your Textiles

Premium sheets and towels are an investment — and with proper care, they'll reward you with years of comfort. As manufacturers, we test every fabric we produce through hundreds of wash cycles. Here's what we've learned about keeping your textiles in peak condition, with specific advice for the Gulf environment.

Washing Your Sheets

Before the First Use

Always wash new sheets before sleeping on them. This removes any residual finishing agents from the manufacturing process and allows the fibres to relax into their natural softness. Use cool water and a gentle cycle for the first wash.

Regular Washing

  • Temperature: Wash in cool to warm water (30-40°C / 86-104°F). Hot water breaks down cotton fibres faster and can cause shrinkage. The exception: if you need to sanitise bedding due to illness, one hot wash (60°C) won't damage quality sheets.
  • Detergent: Use a mild, liquid detergent. Avoid powder detergents — they can leave undissolved residue in fabric. Less is more: half the recommended dose is usually sufficient for sheets.
  • Cycle: Gentle or normal cycle. Avoid heavy-duty cycles — the aggressive agitation is unnecessary and accelerates wear.
  • Load size: Wash sheets separately or with similar items only. Never wash sheets with towels (the terry loops abrade sheet fibres), jeans (zippers and rivets cause snags), or anything with hooks or Velcro.

What to Avoid

  • Bleach: Never use chlorine bleach on coloured or white sheets. It weakens fibres and yellows white cotton over time. For whitening, use oxygen-based bleach (sodium percarbonate) occasionally.
  • Fabric softener: Skip it entirely. Fabric softener coats fibres with a waxy residue that reduces breathability and absorbency — the opposite of what you want in the Gulf heat. Quality cotton sheets get softer naturally with each wash.
  • Overloading: Sheets need room to move freely in the drum. Overloaded machines cause uneven washing and excessive wrinkling.

Drying

  • Best option: Line dry in shade. Gulf sunshine is intense — direct sun can fade colours and weaken fibres. If you line dry, bring sheets in promptly once dry to avoid UV damage.
  • Tumble dry: Low heat only. Remove sheets while slightly damp and fold or put on the bed — they'll finish drying wrinkle-free. High heat causes shrinkage and fibre damage.
  • Never: Leave wet sheets sitting in the machine. In Bahrain's humidity, mildew can develop within hours.

Gulf-Specific: Dealing with Hard Water

Bahrain's water supply is predominantly desalinated, but mineral buildup can still occur, especially in older buildings. Hard water leaves mineral deposits on fibres, making sheets feel stiff and reducing their lifespan.

  • Add white vinegar: Half a cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle dissolves mineral deposits and naturally softens fibres without the problems of fabric softener.
  • Descale your machine: Run an empty hot cycle with 2 cups of white vinegar monthly to keep your washing machine free of mineral buildup.
  • Consider a water softener: If your water is particularly hard, an in-line water softener for your washing machine can significantly extend textile life.

Caring for Towels

  • Wash before first use: This removes any manufacturing residue and improves absorbency.
  • Wash warm (40°C): Towels can handle slightly warmer water than sheets.
  • Skip fabric softener: It coats the terry loops and drastically reduces absorbency. If your towels feel stiff, add white vinegar to the rinse cycle instead.
  • Tumble dry medium: Tumble drying actually helps towels maintain their fluffiness. The tumbling action lifts the terry loops back up.
  • Replace every 2-3 years: Even the best towels lose absorbency over time. Bath towels used daily should be replaced every 2 years; those used less frequently, every 3 years.

Stain Removal Guide

  • General rule: Treat stains immediately. The longer a stain sets, the harder it is to remove.
  • Blood: Cold water only (hot water sets protein stains). Apply hydrogen peroxide directly, let sit 10 minutes, then wash cold.
  • Coffee/Tea: Rinse with cold water, apply white vinegar, let sit 15 minutes, wash as normal.
  • Oil/Grease: Apply dish soap directly to the stain, gently work in, let sit 30 minutes, wash warm.
  • Sweat/Yellowing: Mix baking soda and water into a paste, apply to the area, let sit 1 hour, wash warm with oxygen bleach.
  • Red wine: Blot (don't rub), cover with salt to absorb, then soak in cold water with oxygen bleach.

Extending the Life of Your Textiles

  • Rotate sets: Have 3 sets of sheets and rotate weekly. This gives each set time to rest between uses and distributes wear evenly.
  • Iron percale, skip sateen: Percale looks best when ironed. Sateen's natural drape means ironing is optional.
  • Store properly: Keep in a cool, dry place. In Bahrain's humidity, ensure your linen closet has good air circulation. Avoid plastic storage bags — use breathable cotton bags instead.
  • Fold along different lines: Fold sheets differently each time to avoid permanent crease lines.
